A farmer rides his horse after finishing his day’s work as the sun sets in the outskirts of Managua November 11, Once merchants, soldiers and explorers could gallop rather than just walk, it revolutionized trade, warfare, the movement of people and the transmission of ideas. It also enabled the development of continent-sized empires such as the Scythians 2, years ago in what is now Iran.
It was all made possible by genes, concluded the study in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Related to skeletal muscles, balance, coordination, and cardiac strength, they produced traits so desirable that ancient breeders selected horses for them, said geneticist Ludovic Orlando of the Natural History Museum of Denmark, who led the study. The result was generations of horses adapted for chariotry, pulling plows, and racing.
Genes active in the brain also underwent selection. Variants linked to social behavior, learning, fear response, and agreeableness are all more abundant in domesticated horses. The discovery of the genetic basis for horse domestication was a long time coming because no wild descendants of ancient breeds survive.
By comparing domesticated species to their wild relatives, scientists figured out how organisms as different as rice, tomatoes and dogs became domesticated. Geneticists not involved in the study suggested that analyzing equine DNA from around the time of domestication, rather than millennia before, might show more clearly what genetic changes occurred as horses were tamed.

The walk covers ground across the island, from Bembridge in the east, travelling via Carisbrooke to The Needles in the western tip of the island. Walk the Wight has been running for 19 years in aid of the Earl Mountbatten Hospice and is now the biggest sponsored walk in the South of England. The principal aim of the walk was to encourage other like-minded people to appreciate the scenery of the island. This developed into the idea that walkers could be sponsored to raise money for charity.
It started off raising money for the island’s own MRI scanner as an appeal had been launched. Once the scanner appeal was complete and because of the large amount of help and support given by staff and friends, it was decided to support the Earl Mountbatten Hospice which it continues to do today. As the years passed, the numbers of people taking part in the walk increased from about 25 in to around 12, now.
As the event grew it became clear the event had to be managed by a larger group, so a committee was formed from within the hospice. Other companies have later come on to support the event such as Red Funnel and Southern Vectis who now provide free travel for walkers.

Power output has taken a jump from 50W to 60W per channel into 8 ohms , thanks to a larger toroidal transformer and improved power supply. The main circuitboard and wiring loom have also seen improvements, drawn from work done on the excellent Naim DAC-V1 , while components in the power amp stage and all signal capacitors have seen an upgrade too.
Since the Naim Nait 5si has no screen, the chosen input will instead feature a green circle of light around its input button. In this respect, the Naim delivers. A photography blog of walks on the Isle of Wight. Thursday, 16 October Walk 29 – Parkhurst Forest – 4. The number 7 bus stops at the junction of Gunville Rd and Forest Rd and the entrance to the forest is a 5 minute walk to the right, just past Island Cranes. I instinctively avoided the path marked Challenge and Adventure, but, after much wandering found that was the route to the very well hidden squirrel hide.
The signs had come off, but turning right leads past this carved squirrel. At the next squirrel, a left turn leads to the hide. The hide was in fact so well concealed that no squirrels actually located it during the time I was there, so I gave up and retraced my steps to the car park. This is my ‘camping in the Canadian Rockies’ picture From the car park a long avenue leads around the western edge of the forest. Parkhurst Forest is one of the country’s most ancient woodlands, a medieval royal hunting ground and the oak plantation dates from Napleonic period, when what is now the prison was a barracks and there was a need for timber to build warships.

Reality Thursday, August 14, by Jessica Booth I remember thinking about college when I was a senior in high school. My friends and I were all convinced that the college dating scene would be so much different. We would be with mature guys who took us on real dates, bought us real presents, and treated us perfectly. Obviously, we were basing all of the ideas off of all the oh-so-realistic movies and TV shows about college out there. Sure, some people meet the love of their life in college.
But a lot of people stumble along, meeting tons of Mr. Wrongs, wondering when guys will actually grow up. I heard this a million times in high school:

Walk 28 Shalfleet to Newtown – 6. My walk began at Shalfleet with its 11th century tower with 5ft thick walls that provided refuge from Danish and French raiders when they sailed up Newtown Creek. The lane alongside the New Inn, Mill Road, follows the creek to a boatyard. With the exception of the final section around Clamerkin Lake, the walk is all on tarmac paths so is good for winter. Today there were huge flocks of Canada Geese on the waters.
There is no walking route around the coast at this point, so once the boatyard is reached I retraced my steps. Normally, just before the New Inn, Mill Lane leads to a footbridge over the creek and a path towards Newtown, but today the bridge was under replacement, so I walked back along the main road to the Dairy Deli, where Corf Road leads into Town Lane, with the option of taking a footpath parallel to the road on the inside of the hedge.
